Chapter Twenty-Seven

Bax, Paul and Duke Morgan closed their laptops. It had been a long day with little to show for it. They told Buck they would meet him at the restaurant, and they grabbed their backpacks and headed for the door.

Buck finished reviewing the evidence logs in the investigation file and looked over the top of his laptop. Sheriff Foley looked deep in thought. Buck closed his laptop.

“You want to talk about it?” asked Buck.

Sheriff Foley stared off into the distance. Buck leaned back in his seat. He could see that Sheriff Foley was feeling troubled, but he wasn’t going to push him until he was ready.

Buck was a patient man who had made patience into an art form. There had been a story circulating the CBI offices for years about Buck getting a murderer to confess just by sitting at the table opposite him and not saying a word for four or five hours. Of course, the time got longer or shorter depending on who told the story, but it was always told as a sign of respect.

Sheriff Foley seemed to snap out of his gloom and looked at Buck. “I feel like my career has hit the shits. First, the worst mass shooting in history happens in my backyard, then we find out one of the vics is a congressman, then there’s a riot during the family vigil and then the governor jumps my ass for revealing that fact to the press.”

“You want to tell me about it?” asked Buck.

Sheriff Foley got quiet again. He sipped his now-cold coffee. “I told her not to do it. That we had promised the governor, but she insisted.”

“Told who?” asked Buck.

“Ellen Thompkins. She wanted to give the press something to chew on other than the riot at the family vigil. She wanted to take some of the pressure off the county. She released the congressman’s name to a friendly reporter so it wouldn’t blow back on her. I should have stopped her.”

“I doubt you could stop Ellen once she sets her mind to something. In the long run, she might have done us a favor.”

“How’s that?” asked the sheriff.

“Maybe someone will come out of the woodwork and tell us what the hell the congressman was doing here.”

“We sure could use a break,” said Sheriff Foley.

Buck’s phone chimed. He unclipped it from his belt and looked at the number.

“Hey, George. What’s up?”

“Hi, Buck. Can you talk?”

Buck looked at the sheriff, once again lost in thought. “Yeah, go ahead.”

“I was able to access the juvy file for Roger Shipman. I’m going to send it to your email. I’d rather it didn’t get into the investigation file.”

Buck’s phone chimed with another incoming call. He checked the number.

“George, let me call you back. The director is calling me.”

Buck disconnected the call with George and answered the director’s call.

“Yes, sir.”

“Cordova’s dead,” said the director. “We found him in his apartment. One shot to the chest and one to the head. He was executed. Buck, what the hell is going on?”

“I wish I knew, sir,” said Buck.
